Literary films on people too often sound like books instead of films. The way characters speak with the jargon of how the really good people in real life. Dialogue script sounds, words and speeches are very well together. This is a trap "Starting in the Night" does not prevent, but it is easy to overlook the minor error, like the rest of the film: Starting Out in the Evening is intelligent and thoughtful. The main reason is to see Frank Langella, playing Leonard Schiller, an aging novelist that the world has forgotten and that it is tempting to hope that his name could be revived by an idolatrous graduation of students who want to do his thesis on his work. The graduate student (Lauren Ambrose) is quite insistent and unlikable, but it makes sense that it was Leonard, as only someone so insistent as she alone could break through the facade. The relationship of these two is a complicated undertaking, to say the least, two players and navigate the difficult terrain well. A subplot involving Leonard's daughter (played by Lili Taylor, who has been a pleasure to see again), and rekindled his relationship with a man who does not approve Leonard (Adrian Lester). "Starting in the Night" is one of those ultra dark films that takes place in winter, when everything is cold and dead, and the predominant color scheme is brown and gray. But the cast brings enough vitality to the Starting Out in the Evening Drama film and the script is quite unpredictable, the final product is the rather depressing. Grade: A -- |
"Starting on the night 'movie is a little strong, but it is complex, the interpretation that the area has a slight whiff of Oscar bait. Frank Langella is Leonard Schiller, a senior writer whose life is being transformed into a series of interviews with young literary critic Heather Wolfe (Lauren Ambrose). There's not much story, but this would be my guesstimation, two of the three people who will see this one want to spend some quality time watching Frank Langella do its thing. Those worth a look; Langella is truly a marvel, his deep, rolling diction imbue all the words with more meaning than most of the actors do a monologue. What tears in their discussions with literary Ambrosio, and offers a slap in the final minute Starting Out in the Evening film that has to be the most devastating physical action, in any Starting Out in the Evening Drama movie this year. However, a great actor not to make a great movie, the thing is mired in the summer and winter which the romance between Langella and Ambrose, instead of being a warm, sweet thing, sent shock waves of unease around the theater. Lili Taylor and also making a serviceable job as Schiller's daughter, his only sub-plot does not fit with the rest of the film. Perhaps the biggest problem is that Brian Morton's excellent novel of the same name, was never intended for the screen, which is mediocre, the direction and bullet holes. So, in summary, Frank Langella gives a splendid performance makes this Starting Out in the Evening Drama movie better than it has the right to be. |
At the risk of sounding cliché ', this Starting Out in the Evening film is not for everyone. It moves a little slow at first, and assume certain things about your audience. However, the general feeling of the film, and communicates the message that is very endearing. Frank Langella is incredible as ever, and perfectly captures what it means to be a writer. His character is a true gentleman. Tea drinking is when a lady enters or leaves the room, and spoke with honesty, but with a gentle touch when necessary. It was really a good thing to see. Lili Taylor was difficult to get an idea. I could not connect with his character. Probably because I was turning 40 and trying to have a child. But his relationship with Adrian Lester was very genuine. They had a great chemistry that really plays in the center-strings. Lauren Ambrose was a little weird. The chemistry between her and Frank seemed too forced for me, and not because of the age difference. The only way I can describe it is through the images of the unstoppable force meeting immovable object. But as I said, overall, the Starting Out in the Evening film is beautiful. The characters are richly developed, the music is beautiful, and the story that really pulls in, as it unfolds. I was not quite sure how to feel about it at first. But the more I saw, my love for the film: Starting Out in the Evening gained momentum and began to really grow. I would recommend this Starting Out in the Evening film for readers, writers, and anyone who enjoys a good drama. |
