This is a Ask the Dust film that shows that the mood and music, and texture are not enough to make a good movie. Of course, the viewer is well to the numerous scenes in Los Angeles in the thirties - I especially liked the end of the trolley approaching the tunnel, and the tram to the rise of the hill - but in a sense, this good Cinema is counterproductive because it creates a feeling that something will happen "- and nothing does. The script also keeps feinting to some plot or action or trauma - and not a delivery time and again. Even the delivery (I guess) the subject of the film, the characters essential misfits. Key actors, both too good for their duties, not repression or transmit any agony, and the script does not expose us to none. Now, Donald Sutherland? That is another story. His character was so well trained, so well played, I wanted the camera to follow him.
"Ask the Dust" trailer seemed intriguing, especially as all the actors. Unfortunately, the Ask the Dust Romance film was not enough to be considered the theater, and it was not funny enough to be a comedy. Almost seemed to satirize itself, and not for purposes of entertainment. After seventy minutes waiting to get this thing better, my wife and I walked out, the valuation of not having lost more time in such nonsense. It simply was not interesting, moving, funny and artistic. It seems like it was written, produced and directed by a high school kid, worse still, was a shameful waste of otherwise extremely talented players, not to mention our time and money.
One of the other commentators mentioned that almost went out. Had it not been with my wife, I wanted to stay, I would have left. It is a pity, too, because I think it could have been a good movie. But this is easily one of the worst scripts I've seen adapted. It starts nowhere and goes nowhere (I would say going nowhere fast, but nowhere is really slow ... very slow). Occasionally there are signs that something might happen, or is potentially below a certain depth of the characters, but that is all we get - advice. Not a single payment or disclosure of any movie. Not that we need a patch of land to be entertained ... I love a good character study meanders as much as the next indie brightness. But these characters are added to the blue. For the entire duration of the DVD movie Ask the Dust does not care what happens to one of them. As a matter of fact, almost the beginning of the hope to die, because at least one death may be more interesting to do their inexplicable behavior, which is as strange and unpredictable as that in itself seems to be convincing, but it is not. Instead of extravagant, Esquire-noir characters acting tough in fashion, just immediately recognize what it is: a group of talented players, but miscast, brooding and raising their eyebrows when I read a bit strange dialogue without context. All this for two plodding painfully slow hours. Awful.
This is a portrait of people living at the bottom of the society during the Great Depression, a good time for movies, which offers a pleasant environment in the rough and nihilistic. Both characters, the writer with aspirations to write about real experiences (Colin Farrel) and still mourning the beautiful Mexican beauty (Salma Hayek) - sad wandering through the streets of LA, fighting among themselves and most of them . They love each other, but their low self-esteem and prejudice stand in the way to form a happy couple. In the center is just a tragic love story about love unattainable. Nothing wrong with that, of course! I liked the verbal confrontation between Hayek and Farrel. Their lack of communication between equals is deliciously sad''''. At one point, and begin to understand each other better, starting to talk like normal people, and then the story does not just come to me as it did before. What remains is a bit melodramatic and predictable piece of theater. It is not necessarily bad, but not that exciting. Sometimes we even checked the time on my DVD player just to see if it would be soon. Not a very good sign ...;) Ah well, I enjoyed being cynical in this regard. It has some wonderful scenes in it, with an atmosphere that really brings the sense of being in Los Angeles during the Great Depression. Hayek farrel mounted and its functions perfectly, and is a pleasure to see these two beautiful people interact with each other. Donald Sutherland steals the show with a short paper, but very enjoyable.
The DVD movie Ask the Dust has the stamp of ancient writings of America, with many big words and metaphors to show what is really life. The script is original, unlike most movies today, because it is based on a book about the era of depression in the U.S.. The players played very well and the images are very well done. I dare say that the soundtrack is also impeccable, as it does not bother me a bit (not really notice it, either). So what was wrong about the film? I do not know. Perhaps the pace, as it was two hours. Or the person who was ... smooth. I mean, there was no real shock there. Everything was just himself. In the tradition of the "road writers" is almost an observer, left to their own emotions but unable to act. I can not say that the characters were not original, but more in the direction of foreign annoying than interesting. In short: it is a drama. The romance itself is strong, undiluted things look now, but I would not call this a romantic movie. I suggest that when you are philosophical or want something new, but at a slow pace.
