I read another review here before seeing the Naqoyqatsi: Life as War film and hoped desperately that it was a mistake - it was not. Koyaanisqatsi was, and remains, a great Naqoyqatsi: Life as War Documentary - filled with images of magnificent sweep and scope, the film: Naqoyqatsi: Life as War was an eloquent statement to make. I was expecting something similar in the third installment. This was an exercise in tedium. It seemed as if the filmmakers raided the library lifetime iconic images of 20th century and fed through a filter of special effects. It is as if in his opinion that what worked in Koyaanisqatsi, work here - extreme close up, slow motion images But here has nothing to say. There was no emotion. Just wall to wall everything from shots of dollar signs, 0 and 1's, faces, bodies, computer chips, JFK, Martin Luther King, Bin Laden, tornadoes destroyed buildings ... you get the picture. To make matters worse, everything was put through amateurish f/x-- mosaic, grain, vortex, reversed. While it may have been a technical marvel, the end result felt empty and worked. Final footage was near the juxtaposition of real images of street violence in the global video game violence - but so what? Nothing new has been said here. A real shame to end this way ...

Reggio, a man as brilliant as it may, in fact missed the boat on this film. He rated a 6 out of 10, which by most standards is pretty good. But it's almost frustrating to think that this was the third part of the trilogy Qatsi. The first two films were very powerful and evocative. Here, however, is really its own kind of movie. Its good. Koyaanisqatsi but not good.

Being a big fan of Philip Glass and Koyannisqatsi generally i wait for this one bit. It is unfortunate that this movie: Naqoyqatsi: Life as War was as flat and cliché as the first Naqoyqatsi: Life as War movie was pioneering and bold. Some of the music, especially the first and last pieces, is impressive, and sounds great in Dolby Digital. Reggio images, with some notable exceptions, as some famous works of art in a morphing another (with a technique much more interesting than the typical morphing) are nothing new, and the usual subjects of the dangers of technology and the corporate greed feel very well spent. Whereas the first Naqoyqatsi: Life as War movie may have inspired a style of television commercial Naqoyqatsi just feels like one.
