A destitute 14 year old (Noah Fleiss) struggles to keep his life together despite harsh abuse at his mother's (Karen Young) hands, harsher abuse at his father's (Val Kilmer), and a growing separation from his slightly older brother (Max Ligosh). Petty thefts for food grow into more major takes until he steals a cash box from the diner where he works. Although Joe uses the money to pay off some of his father's debts and to replace his mother's records that his father smashed in a fit of temper, Joe gets no thanks...

I found this Joe the King Crime film almost by accident. I have the habit of looking on IMDB for films of actors and actresses whose performances I enjoyed. So he saw the promise to Noah Fleiss, as shown in Josh and SAM, flower to ripe fruit in his wonderful performance in this film. Joe is a young person living in poverty and deprived of love. He is humiliated and brutalised by his teacher and his father drunk. Only for his brother, Mike, and just as love-a friend of hunger and, finally, a counselor in question (Ethan Hawke) lend any support. Surprisingly, and Joe is totally unselfish, having slaved to earn money to survive and to improve the lives of those close to him, gradually driven more and more crime. I saw this DVD film Joe the King with two friends and the three of us are so captivated by this moving story that none of us moved or spoke a word until long after the credits had finished rolling. When the silence was broken that was with the word "Wow! How was that?" Remember the name, Noah Fleiss, because he is destined to be a star.
