I read the book six times and could not wait to see the film. I was out of place to put first, because much of the DivX film Borstal Boy is pure fiction. Charlie and Brendan only had a slight spat in his three years in reform schools, and finished the best of friends anyway. The girl in the DivX film Borstal Boy never existed, and much of the rest of the DVD film Borstal Boy was also oddly fictitious. Millwall Charlie was in Southampton when it was sunk off Malta (Mediterranean), but I guess it uses the HMS Prince Of Wales because there were films that deal with the sinking of the ship, and he did a good way to know that Brendan Charlie was dead (much more powerful than the scene in the book and the book). Despite all that, I loved the movie. Brendan Behan actually say "love can English people without them being seven feet in height or one hundred years dead." I think he made that statement because I knew that Charlie Millwall so well, and had seen many other good people among the English people with whom he was connected in one way or another. The Warden, Mr. Joyce was a very good person, and so many others. I think Brendan Behan had a serious relationship with Charlie Millwall (obviously in the book but never write exactly). I would recommend the book to anyone, and believe that the Borstal Boy Drama was very good, irrespective of fiction. Shawn Hatosy does a very good job in the movie, Danny Dyer and is even better. Do not miss this film. |
Peter Sheridan, the director of "Borstal Boy" shows a good sensitivity to the material based on the life of Brendan Behan. Having seen the play only in the Lyceum theater in the'70s, it was fascinating to see what kind of adaptation that was on the screen. The best thing in the DivX Movie Borstal Boy is the young cast members gathered for the film. What emerges in the Borstal Boy Drama movie is the friendships made in the reform camp Mr. Behan affected for life. The fact that young people can get to someone like Brendan as different as Charlie, speaks of the tolerance for someone who comes from Brendan's Fund. Shawn Hatosy does a wonderful job in its image of Brendan Behan. For an actor born in America, this young man clearly shows a series that many of his contemporaries lack. In the role of Charlie Milwall, Danny Dyer gives a brilliant performance. Lee Ingleby as the cruel Dale, is perfect. Eva Birthistle as director Joyce's daughter, is the only woman in a man's world and she does a great job in making the girl come to life. Michael York has a good chance in the role of Joyce. The only problem with the DivX film Borstal Boy is that the dialogue is difficult to follow, either because of the sound track, or the heavy accent Mr. Sheridan has everyone talking as a way to show authenticity. We have seen the DVD version, and had to turn the volume up, and still sounded muffled. Despite that flaw, "Borstal Boy" is a powerful Borstal Boy Drama that needs to be seen. |
